National Volunteer Month is ending but there is still time and plenty of opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others this year. And if you are looking for ways to get involved, our Knack Squad might inspire you with why they volunteer and where they give back.

It’s no secret art, music, and movement can elevate the body and mind. PHAME—a fine and performing arts academy in Portland, Oregon—incorporates these components to inspire adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “I volunteer and donate to this organization because it’s a unique program—unlike any other,” says Sierra J. “The joy I’ve witnessed PHAME bring to the students and their families is truly immeasurable.”

For Isha H., supporting the American Heart Association—a nonprofit organization that funds cardiovascular medical research and educates consumers on heart-healthy living—is a heartfelt commitment after losing her dad to heart disease. “The American Heart Association is a household name that does wonders for education and support. I’m always happy to support this cause.”

Giving back to our youth is a meaningful way to support your community and the reason Stephanie M. supports Seattle Public Schools and Greenwood Elementary School PTA. “I volunteer and donate to make sure all kids have equal access,” she shared.

Thirty-one million Americans are uninsured and over 40% have inadequate insurance, which makes self-care and holistic preventive healthcare a luxury for many people—which Raven W. believes “should be accessible to all, not just those who have the income to afford it.” She volunteers at Heal One World—a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing holistic preventive healthcare at low or no cost.

Using your skills to help others or businesses is another great way to volunteer. Liz R. donates her time and graphic design skills to Peoria Home—an organization that provides sanctuary and support for womxn survivors of sex trafficking, prostitution, and addiction. She gives back “to help bring awareness to the cause.”

There are countless ways to safely volunteer and make a difference within your community and beyond—from giving time and money, to supporting local schools. The coronavirus pandemic has increased the need for donations and volunteers. Now more than ever, many individuals and organizations are reliant on the generosity of others to help those in need. Be a part of meaningful change—let your passions inspire your decision on how to give back all year long.
